Which Hatsu Type - Rob Lucci

Rob Lucci is the Leader of Cipher Pole Number 9 in the universe of One Piece. A secret task force created specifically for back door dealings and assassination, these agents are cold blooded killers and Lucci was the worst and strongest of them.

Today, I wish to examine his powers and, more generally, the powers associated with the Rokushiki martial art. Bearing in mind, in the One Piece universe all of these abilities are done with pure physical condition, with seemingly no regard for Haki or other supernatural forces. Because of that, this won't be a pure 1-to-1 transplant. I will simply be examining how Rokushiki techniques could be simulated by Nen should a less physically adept person attempt to use them.

Enhancement

Enhancement is the act of reinforcing and strengthening the body or a substance. It is a balance of attack and defense, generally speaking. Because of that, many of Rokushiki's techniques may be most aligned with this particular brand of Hatsu. In particular, Shigan, the finger piercing technique could be seen as a really powerful Ko. Tekkai, the Iron Body, could be seen as an advanced, still form of Ken. Soru would be a very powerful run. And the Rokuogan in particular, which Lucci is capable of, is very similar to Wing's Hatsu in particular. Bearing in mind, he himself is an enhancer, it would make sense that such an ability would fall under this type.

Transmutation

Transmutation is the act of taking your aura and giving it properties of some substance or energy. Due to its nature, it can apply properties of many different, unrelated substances for great effect.

Though the manga doesn't show Lucci having any abilities that would fall under this type, in the anime he has a flying version of Shigan which is on fire. In the anime, this is due to friction with the air but such a feat would also be possible with transmutation type nen, as we see from Feitan against Zazan.

Conjuration

Conjuration is the act of materializing thoughts. Where transmutation is about applying properties to your aura, Conjuration is about creating the substances that have those properties.

In the time I spent with Lucci, I never saw him use any ability that could be categorized as Conjuration. Because of that, I don't think he has this category within his abilities.

Emission

Emission is the act of firing off your aura at a distance and keeping it self-sustaining while it is away from the primary Aura source.

Though Lucci does have two different variations on a flying Shigan, the Rokushiki abilities that would fit this type better are Geppou and Rankyaku. Geppou to propel oneself with the aura emitted from the feet, and Rankyaku to send aura out of a strong kick.

Manipulation

Manipulation is the act of giving your aura a command and having whatever is holding that aura follow that command.

Though it is not yet known, Lucci's ability to change his species and to a lesser extent reduce his size with Life Return: Kami-e Bushin seem to be relatively similar to Bisky reducing her muscled form down to the size of a Loli using aura. If this ability is manipulation, as I suspect it is, it would make sense that these two abilities would be very advanced applications of manipulation.

Specialization

Specialization is the possession of any ability that does not fall under the other five categories.

Though unclear, this could potentially include Lucci's species change from human to leopard and something in between, since we're not entirely certain how far Manipulation can go. While manipulation could certainly contain Life Return: Kami-e Bushin as Bisky has a similar ability, I cannot say the same for certain Devil Fruit abilities. Because of that, it could be either or.

Conclusion

If Lucci were a Nen User, he would be quite a formidable one. Though primarily an Enhancer and Emitter, Lucci has abilities that could fall under at least one category of Nen except for Conjuration, making Lucci a very high level fighter indeed.

Thanks for reading and I'll see you next time.
