Which Hatsu Type - Team RWBY

Ruby Rose is a young girl around the age of 15 who's fighting to become what is known as a Huntress, a warrior who hunts creatures of Grimm to protect the world from them. Together with her Team of Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long, Ruby is working toward a better future. Ruby is still young and there's still quite a bit that she could still learn, given that RWBY is only on its 4th Volume right now. There are many ways her character can develop but, nonetheless, I'm going to try to pinpoint her strengths by talking about how her abilities would work in the confines of Nen.

Also, because Ruby's abilities are quite limited at the moment, I think it's best to talk about the entirety of her team, since they all seem to have a fair bit of variety but each one specializes far too much for me to have a decent article on just one.

Ten

Although little is known about the application of Aura in the RWBY universe, Volume 1 did demonstrate a small bit of basic knowledge of how Aura works in the form of Jean Ark. When his then-partner Pyrrha Nikkos awakens his aura, it immediately surrounds him to protect him from harm and we also see throughout Volumes 1 and 3 that Aura depletes the more damage you take, not unlike the application of Ten. Although the character of Ren shows a barrier projection skill against a King Taijitu, we so far do not know if that is a universal aura ability and, if it is, if Ruby can use it. However, it would seem that Ten is an automatic application in the world of Remnant.

Zetsu

Unlike Ten, which is automatic when you awaken your aura, Zetsu has so far not been shown to be usable in any given context. This may be because shutting off aura is too much like the way the Grimm function but I thought it was worth pointing out for the sake of clarity.

Ren

Ren, much like Zetsu, does not seem to be an application that is usable in the world of Remnant. As I've discussed in previous posts, Ren is the ability to charge up your aura, not unlike the ki charging mechanic in many Dragon Ball games. However, RWBY's application of Aura seems to be more like a standard video game than that of a Dragon Ball video game, which means energy charging is not possible. Instead, characters have a set amount of aura that can be used until it is brought down and they need to rest before they can recover.

Though Yang's ability to amplify her strength may be seen as some limited variation on Ren, it is not a universal ability and thus, could not be qualified as the actual principle.

Now that we've covered 3 of the 4 principles, now it's time to get into the Hatsu categories.

Enhancement

Enhancement is all about physical skills. Whether you amplify your strength, speed, durability, or regeneration, anything that can be used to reinforce is a part of Enhancement.

Suffice it to say that, if Ruby were a Nen user, she would easily be an Enhancer. Her ability is immense amounts of speed and though the exact numbers are not known, she is capable of creating small scale natural disasters as seen in the food fight at the beginning of Volume 2.

That said, though she does seem to have a limit on stamina, that's more due to the nature of Aura and Semblance in RWBY than it is about a lack of skill. When she has energy, she's more than capable of dominating the battlefield with sheer speed but, when she's tired, she will struggle to have any chance against an opponent.

Weiss does seem to have a small ability to amplify her attributes with her glyphs. However, I would not say that this makes her an enhancer right out of the gate, as the way she does this is a bit different from the rest of Team RWBY.

Blake, just as well, does not seem to have a lot in the way of physical augmentation. Though naturally strong and agile, that may be more due to her physiology as a Faunus and her upbringing with the White Fang.

Lastly, Yang does seem to have a fair bit of enhancement skills on her. As described by Taiyang during Volume 4, Yang's power amplifies tremendously the more damage she takes but only for a single strike, and when that strike fails to land or if she hits an unintended target, she'll be exhausted and unable to fight. This application is relatively similar to some applications of Ko, particularly a Ko variant of Feitan's Pain Packer.

Transmutation

Transmutation is about taking your aura and altering its properties to mimic something else.

So far, the only Transmuter on the team seems to be Weiss Schnee. Her glyphs can offer a wide variety of special abilities, such as speed boosts, sticking points to run or stay on walls, platforms to jump off of, or amplifications of elemental abilities. However, the elemental abilities seem to be reinforced by Dust.

Yang does seem to have a small amount of fire ability attached to her aura. However, it's primarily a physical augmentation and the fire attached to it may in fact be just a visual effect. In this instance, her physical augmentation may be comparable to Killua's Godspeed, being a physical augmentation gained with an elemental effect rather than the element being the focus.

Emission

Emission is the act of projecting your aura at long range. So far, the only ones on the team who seem to have that level of skill are Weiss and Blake. Weiss can project her glyphs a fair distance from her body without much trouble.

Blake on the other hand, does certainly need Emission skills for her doppelganger but it's not known how far it can extend when it's left alone, as it's usually more of a diversion than an actual copy.

Conjuration

Conjuration is the act of manifesting your aura in a variety of ways. It's comparable but different to the Transmuter. Though both are about mimicking physical attributes, Transmuters give their aura those properties while Conjurers actually make those substances.

Here, it would seem the only actual Conjurer on the team is Blake, as she's capable of summoning a doppelganger to assist her in battle. However, her use of it, while comparable to Kastro, is quite a bit different from his. While both have a similar weakness, it's safe to assume that Blake would not be bested by Hisoka the same way Kastro was. The difference is that Kastro relied on the double to make Hisoka think that there were two of him, while Blake would only use it for distraction to make Hisoka or an opponent like him whiff their attack before she goes in to punish him.

Manipulation

Manipulation is the act of giving your aura a command and having it, or what it's imbued into perform the command. In this way, it is similar to programming, telling a piece of aura to do something and then it executes it.

To my knowledge, I don't really think any member of Team RWBY has any manipulation skills. Although Blake's doppelganger may have some small motions to distract anyone looking at it, I think this is less about being a skilled manipulator as it is about avoiding detection, and thus it's not clear how much skill this requires.

Specialization

Specialization is any power that does not fall under any of the other five categories. In this way, the act of being a specialist is the act of having no category.

Although Yang's power boost does seem to be physically similar to Kurapika's Emperor Time, and even gives Yang the same color eyes, it doesn't seem to offer her any specialist ability the way Emperor Time would for Kurapika. It does amplify her strength but that's more due to her semblance than anything else.

What did you think of this post? Did you like it? Did you think my assertions were accurate? Or do you think I'm wasting my time. Let me know in the comments. Have a wonderful day and do your best out there.
