Which Hatsu Type - Shoto Todoroki

Shoto Todoroki is a student of class 1-A of the U.A. High School in My Hero Academia. Born of a quirk marriage, he possesses two unique quirks combined into one, one from his mother and one from father, the latter of whom is the number 2 hero after All-Might and caused the birth of Shoto for that reason.

Here, I will be discussing Todoroki's powers to see if they could manifest in a similar way within the confines of Nen.

Enhancement

Enhancement the act of reinforcing or augmenting any given skill, substance, or property to make it more powerful.

Todoroki doesn't seem to have any enhancement skills, though some would definitely benefit him on the whole.

Transmutation

Transmutation is the act of giving properties to your aura in order for it to be given unique effects. This isn't just about making your aura mimic a substance either, as some transmuters have been known to give properties from unrelated substances to their aura in order to augment effectiveness with creativity, an example being Hisoka's Bungee Gum.

Here is where we start to see some of Todoroki's abilities. Initially, one would think that his abilities are entirely transmutation given that he has both ice and fire. However, I do not believe this is the case. While you could make the argument for his freezing powers being transmuted, as those really have no other means of manifesting within aura, his fire could just as easily be a conjuration ability, which seems likely, given that it has a limit that fire users from HXH simply do not have.

Conjuration

Conjuration is the act of transforming your aura directly into the substance or creation that you desire.

In this way, you could make an argument for Todoroki's fire being conjuration, as his fire does seem to have limitations that transmuted fire simply doesn't have. Namely, that it burns a specific color and is not self-sustaining for the most part. While it can last if left alone, it goes out just as easily as a regular fire would, something a transmuted skill would not have to deal with.

Emission

Emission is the act of allowing your aura to travel from its source or last for long periods of time disconnected from it. This one you could definitely make a case for as Todoroki's ice and fire seem to last quite a while when disconnected from him. Though his fire seems to dissipate with a certain amount of force, his ice so far stays active unless an actual heat source other than the sun interacts with it, something regular ice would not be able to do.

Manipulation and Specialization

Manipulation is the act of giving your aura a command and having it or the substance inhabiting it follow that command. And Specialization is the act of having aura that does not fall into any of the previous categories.

I've combined these two categories into one section because Todoroki doesn't seem to have any application in either of these areas.

Vows and Restrictions

Vows and Restrictions are a mechanic of Nen that I have yet to cover with any other character but I feel the need to do so here due to the nature of Todoroki's abilities. Essentially, for those not familiar with this application of Nen, a restriction is a limitation of application you place on your Nen that have to be met before you can use it, and a Vow is the resulting punishment that comes from breaking the restriction. The more limiting the restriction and punishing the vow, the more powerful the Nen.

Now, it is worth considering that having no punishment for breaking your restriction is necessary to augment your aura's abilities but the more you restrict your aura, the less useful it will become due to lacking in number of useful contexts. As a result, these are often used together to increase effectiveness dramatically.

Now, Todoroki doesn't seem to have any vows, due to the nature of quirks in My Hero Academia. However, he does seem to have a restriction, which is described within the way his quirk is told.

His quirk is called "Half Hot Half Cold" and is described as Fire on his left side and Ice and Freezing on his right side. This could be seen as a light restriction, only use the ice with your right side and only use fire on the left to amplify the effectiveness of both.

Though Todoroki himself does not have a choice in this mechanic, if someone in HXH were to replicate it, I imagine it would work fairly similarly in this regard.

Conclusion

I primarily see Todoroki being a Transmuter, with his fire and ice abilities, though Conjuration is also a facet, and Emission would be part of it as well. I don't see any enhancement skills, nor Manipulation or Specialization and though his vow and restriction would give context to why he's so strong among his classmates, this would leave him a fairly small kit against a more skilled Nen user.
