After-Thoughts Mini: Unintentional Death in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX

The Society of Light Arc in GX is a bit of an outlier in the series, even among GX. The first half of season 1 was a bit of a slice of life kind of thing, which was more about having fun and generally being light hearted. Then the Sacred Beast Arc, which was much more a redo of Battle City than anything else. Then the Yubel Arc was darker in general with its much more stern characters but still had a bit of light-heartedness in it from Lexi's sassiness, Cyrus breaking the fourth wall, and Jaden's casual racism ("This is no time to be speaking Australian!").

However, the Society of Light arc was one where many of the characters were changed, for better and worse. Jaden gained a new deck with the Neospacians but was generally unchanged apart from that. Alexis became annoying and grumpy but was back to normal after the brainwashing wore off. Chazz separated more from his former status as Kaiba 2.0 after this arc. But easily the most drastic change was within Zane.

Early on in the arc, Chazz has a duel against Aster Phoenix, and loses pretty humiliatingly. Ordinarily, someone of Zane's experience and caliber would just pick himself back up and try again. However, he continually loses over and over again, for reasons we don't know, and has to go into Underground duels to get his reputation back. And the very first one of those duels is what I want to talk about.

You see, during that duel, Zane duels a muscular guy with a squeaky voice who specializes in keeping his life points high so he never loses. The duel ends in what many Duelists today know as a Chimeratech OTK (One Turn Kill) but this is a special thing to note here.

You see, like any event that uses physical pain as a punishment for losing, you have to make sure that the torture is calibrated to the maximum amount of the shocks they can take in a duel is capped out around the same area as the life points, that way nobody dies accidentally. In GX, this would be around the 4000-5000 mark. However, Zane defeated this guy while he had almost 11,000 LP.

No matter how resistant you are to electric shocks, a shock to the neck that is 3 times the amount necessary to make you pass out will certainly kill you. This is one instance where dueling actually did kill someone. I just thought it was something interesting to note before I move on.

That's all. Have a wonderful day.
